When preparing a product for commercial distribution, create a square graphic with sufficiently large dimensions (1024×1024 is recommended).

Once you submit the graphic, we will create appropriate variants depending on the product type. The resulting file will be added to your product’s Assets in order to be recognized by FxFactory as the product’s official icon.

The submitted graphic should not have rounded corners, drop shadows or strong lighting effects. Some of those features are applied by us (statically). Others, such as drop shadows, are dynamically created by the FxFactory application depending on the context in which the icon is shown.

The submitted graphic should not sport a bezel of its own. Bezels look rather ugly when the “clapper board” overlay is added to Motion Template-based products. This is also true for traditional plug-ins products, since we may decide to add a dynamic bezel to icons in the future to signify special conditions.

Avoid putting text in the icon, especially if the text is redundant. For example, the default icon contains the letters “FX” but that icon is just a placeholder, not something to imitate. When is the last time you saw the letters “APP” in an icon on the App Store? Similarly, spelling out the product's name in the icon is redundant: the icon is always displayed next to the product name anyway.

When creating a free product, keep in mind that FxFactory will automatically add an overlay to the product's icon in order to differentiate it from commercial products. The overlay is a ribbon, displayed in blue by default. The color of the ribbon can be customized via the “Product” options.
